Replacement Upvc Window Handles

Almost all replacement window handles made of upvc come with everything you need to complete the task. However, if the old handle had screws or pins holding it, these must be removed. Then, you need to remove the snap-in cover that is on the base of the handle.

You will then need to determine the type of window lock and handle you're replacing. This is vital!

Espag

Espag handles are a type of multipoint locks that are designed to fit on casement windows like uPVC or wooden double glazing. They feature seven millimetre square spindles that can be fitted into the gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned, it opens with a series of locks that run around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles, also known as shootbolts, provide more security than the single point lock that is found on older window frames.

They are available in a number of different designs, including inline and cranked handles that can be used for either left or right-hand operation. You can also find ergonomic handles that enhance the appearance and feel of your window, as well as handles.

You'll need to measure the spindle size from the base of your uPVC handle in order to purchase the right replacement. This measurement is referred to as step height and can aid you in finding the perfect uPVC handle for your home.

You may have to remove any screw covers that protect the screws that hold the handle in place, and if that's the case, you can use the screwdriver or pliers to break the pins holding the handle. Cockspur

Cockspur handles can be found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle is closed and then turns into a wedge-shaped receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches, which are also covered in this section.) The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable models. They are available in various nose sizes that can be adapted to the existing frame.

The handle locks using the small spur (little triangle bit) pulling up against a wedge of plastic which is attached to the frame. These are usually one-way handles, however a deadlock with a locking mechanism can be added to give additional security.

Similar to Espag handles, the replacement handles for cockspur handle are simple to put in place, all you need is a new set of screws (supplied) and the proper backset. The backset is measured from the baseplate to the nose on the underside of the handle. Aluminium window frames are typically 9mm wide, while UPVC is 21mm wide. There are also many variations, so it's essential to measure prior to purchasing the handle.

This type of window handle can be substituted by simply unscrewing the existing handle and removing the spindle, or in some cases, the entire handle. The replacement handle can then be secured with a pair of pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screw is available in a brass or a zinc finish to match existing hardware. There is also an option of self-locking pozidriv screws.

This is an easy to install cockspur handle replacement that is perfect for fixing or replacing old uPVC windows. They feature a universal design which makes them suitable for all profiles and backsets. Each handle comes with three packers, each with different thicknesses. They are slid on the underside of handles and can be stacked to create backsets as small as 9mm or as big as 21mm. They are available in left and right handed versions and come in lockable or nonlockable versions with a variety of nose heights.

Tilt and turn

The premium European window style with tilt and turn has been in use in Europe for decades, but it is only now starting to take off in the Americas. They combine the advantages of three window handles replacement types into one - tilt, pivot, and in-swing. They are ideal for older homes because they provide more ventilation than conventional windows.

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they lock like any other fixed window. By turning the handle either 90° or 180°, based on the tilt-and-turn type of window the sash opens inwards and the window tilts inwards to allow air to circulate. This is an excellent way to allow air circulation without having to open an enormous potentially dangerous window.

The sash can be opened fully by turning the handle 90° or 180°@. This allows for full air circulation which is especially useful for draughty houses or rooms where smoke or other odors can build up. This allows you to easily clean the glass's outside since you can do it from inside your home. This is a task that can be a risky task.

Tilt-and-turn windows are also very safe. When locked in a closed position, they are very difficult to open from outside, and they feature double seals that prevent rainwater from entering the house when in the tilted in-swing position. This can be a particularly beneficial feature for older homes, where intruders are more likely to target traditional windows that can be opened via the side hinges.

Spade

There are many types of window handles that can be installed to upvc double glazed windows. There are two main kinds of handles: Cockspur and Espag.
